Lucien was called up for his military service in 1949. He later joined the second contingent in 1951. A collection of rare colorized pictures bear witness to his deployment on the Korean peninsula.

After his return from Korea, Lucien remained in the Army and supervised the formation of new recrutes as an instructor at the Ecole de Candidats Gradés d’Infanterie (E.C.G.I.). In 1975, he completed his training as a specialist in explosives and ammunition. In November, he was assigned as a non-commissioned officer to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit at Waldhof camp. Lucien retired in 1986 and left the Army with the rank of Adjudant-Major.
