On 8 July 1949, Arthur was conscripted into the military. He later volunteered to join the first contingent. After six months into the campaign, his merits on the battlefield were rewarded with a promotion to Caporal in July 1951.
Back in Luxembourg, he stayed in service as a mechanic and instructor for the training of new recruits. It was not until February 1953 that Arthur submitted his resignation, expressing his will of “creating a situation in civil life”. Arthur later earned his living as a long-haul truck driver.
