René was drafted in November 1949 and attached to the Ist Battalion. Starting in January 1950, he served in the Corps de la Garde until his discharge in May 1950. In April 1951, he reenlisted for six months and was assigned to the IInd Battalion. In October 1951, he extended his service for three more years.

After his younger brother enlisted in 1951, René followed suit and volunteered to fight in the Korean War. Joseph later explained his brother's decision in an interview, arguing that René had gone to Korea to look after his brother. As part of the second contingent ranked Soldat de 2e Classe, René served as a sniper and rifleman. In June 1952, he was promoted to Soldat de 1re Classe.

Upon his return from Korea, René followed a military career for three months before he was demobilized in May 1953. He was subsequently hired by the national archives as a messenger.
