On 21 November 1950, Fernand was enrolled into the IInd Battalion of the Luxembourg Army. One year later, in December 1951, he joined the Corps de la Garde. After the dispatch of a second contingent to Korea, Fernand volunteered as a rifleman (Tireur), ranked Soldat de 2e Classe. In Korea, he was promoted to Soldat de 1re Classe in June 1952.

After his return, Fernand was reassigned to the Corps de la Garde. In civil life, he worked for the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) and later as a doorman at cigarette manufacturer Heintz van Landewyck in Luxembourg City.

As a lifelong member of the Anciens Combattants association, he was entrusted with the function of flag bearer at military ceremonies. In his later years, he travelled to South Korea with other veterans to commemorate the truce signed in 1953.
