After completing his compulsory military service between March and September 1949, Guillaume reported as a volunteer to the Luxembourg Army in May 1950, but he withdrew his application shortly afterwards. He stated that his intention to join his parents in the Belgian Congo was the decisive reason to cancel his commitment. In 1952 however, he joined the second contingent and left for Korea in March 1952. Except for his promotion to Soldat de 1re Classe in June while still overseas, little is known about Guillaume’s time in Korea.

Following his military discharge, “Wulles'' left Luxembourg. The path he took can not be reconstructed with complete certainty, but he might have lived with his parents in the Belgian Congo for a while. It also stands to reason that he left for Canada, when the Congo independence movement gained momentum in the late 1950ies, provoking the exodus of the European population.* In Canada, he spent the rest of his life with his wife Rina and their two sons, Albert and Jeannot.
