On 8 November 1948, Théodore (“Théo”) was drafted into the Army. After his promotion to Caporal-Infirmier, he voluntarily extended his service and joined the first contingent to fend off the communist troops that had invaded South Korea in June 1950. According to the records of Lieutenant Jos Wagener’s diary, listing Théo as Caporal Mortier, he was in charge of a mortar group. After his return from Korea, he worked as a medic instructor in the military until he was detached to the High Commission for National Protection.

“Do hunn mir d’Chinesen am Dall gesinn kommen mat deenen honnerten an honnerten, einfach  sou Chrëschtbeemecher um Reck ze droen an wann sech e Fliger nëmme gewisen huet, hunn sech se zesummegesat op d’Hippecher an dunn huet e gemengt et wier e Bësch.”

"Soldat modèle. A rempli sa fonction de chef d’équipe Mo. (Mortier) de son chef de peloton. Avec compétence et efficience. A été très apprécié par le chef de service de santé du Corps dans ses fonctions d’infirmier, qu’il a exercé simultanément a sa fonction de combat. Fera un excellent s/officier."
