At the age of 21, Armand was called up for military service. He answered the call for volunteers to Korea in 1950 out of a thirst for adventure, but also to lighten his mother’s financial burden due to numerous children.

In Korea, Armand actively participated in the battle at the Imjin River and played a role in its successful outcome. Back in Luxembourg, Armand did not receive the warm homecoming he expected. During his first year back into civil life, working in the iron and steel industry (HADIR), co-workers accused him of having gone to Korea because he had something to hide.

Anyhow, never losing his positive attitude, Armand met Marie-Ange Hermes. Both settled in Leudelange, where they married in 1953 and had three children. On the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, in 2010, he went back to South Korea and finally came to terms with history when he saw the highly positive development of the country, and met the people grateful to him and his fellow soldiers for their service.
