René was called up for military service on 28 May 1951. At the end of his compulsory service, he reenlisted in February 1952 and joined the second Luxembourg contingent as a Soldat de 2e Classe. While in Korea, René was promoted to Soldat de 1re Classe in June 1952.

During an attack at Chokko-Ri on 26 September 1952, René and five other Luxembourg soldiers were wounded by enemy mortar shrapnel. According to the statement of his superior officer, Lieutenant Lutty, René was wounded while rescuing a comrade.

Back in Luxembourg, Rene intended to continue his military career, but due to his father's health, he decided to temporarily leave the Army in 1953 to spend more time with his family. In July 1957 and October 1958, René was recalled by the Army for field manoeuvres of 21 days each.
