Richard joined the Luxembourg Army on 15 July 1949. In 1952, driven by the conviction of serving his country, he volunteered for the second contingent and boarded the plane headed out for the Far East on 14 March 1952.

Following his return from Korea, he remained in the Army, being assigned to several different branches until 1957, when he was finally detached to the customs administration. Later, he worked for the steel manufacturer Arbed in southern Luxembourg. Due to hard working conditions, Richard succumbed to a heart attack on 16 November 1971. He received a military funeral, including all necessary honors, at the cemetery in Lallange.

Richard was married and had a son.
