After his compulsory military service in 1949, Paul rejoined the Luxembourg Army as a volunteer on 8 March 1950. As a Soldat de 1re Classe, he was stationed in Luxembourg, then in Bitburg, before joining the second contingent in February 1952 to fight in Korea.

He was one of the few volunteers to report for a second term on 4 February 1953. After the war, he was promoted to Caporal, attached to the transportation service. After his military service, he applied for a job with the police, allowing him to eventually work as a customs officer to Grevenmacher. Paul’s mental health, already shaken by the war, took another hit when his wife, Christine Schroeder, died in November 1956, fueling severe alcohol abuse and depression, which finally led to his death merely two years later.
