Jean served in the military between 9 July and 28 September 1945, to specialise as the baker of his company. He accomplished his task to the great satisfaction of his superiors. After his compulsory service, he returned to work in a private bakery in Senningen. After three years, he decided to reenlist in the Luxembourg Army in December 1948.

After the beginning of the Korean War, Jean joined the first contingent. Overseas, he became popular among the ranks because of his record player  and his vinyl collection, providing music to the contingent.

Following his discharge in November 1951, Jean settled in Wasserbillig and married Irma Weyer.
